Forget Forgetfulness: Take Natural Supplements For Memory

As we age, it is normal to find ourselves having a hard time remembering certain things.  Memory loss can range from simple forgetfulness to the tragedy of Alzheimer’s or dementia.  Memory loss is quickly becoming a national health crisis as more and more people are affected each year.

The good news is that memory loss is not inevitable, even among the oldest.  There are steps we can take to help prevent memory loss.  It helps to understand how memory works to determine which strategies may work best for you.

Information is stored in the brain as memories.  Most of the memory processes occur while we sleep, encoding and then storing our memories in the brain.  Our brain links new information with older information to create new memories.

The brain contains a delicate and complex network of synapses linking neurons together.  Information is transferred between these nerves by neurotransmitters, a type of chemical messenger. The most important of these is acetylcholine.

The brain has several areas where it stores memories. These are the hippocampus, the amygdala, and several sites in the medial temporal lobe.  Memory loss occurs when neurotransmitter pathways or neurons are damaged.  Also, any damage which affects the amount of activity in the acetylcholine will also have an impact memory.

There are several natural supplements for memory which seem effective in improving memory loss or acting as memory boosters. There are even a number of clinical studies affirming the effectiveness of these natural supplements.  Here are a few of the most effective.

Vitamin B

B vitamins are important to several physiological and biochemical processes within our bodies.  These vitamins are essential for all cellular events and synaptic reactions.  They are also integral to regulation of the DNA and stabilizing the immune system.

Vitamin B helps improve memory by improving nutrient and oxygen transport to the brain cells through increased production of the red blood cells.  Vitamin B also helps stabilize homocysteine levels within the brain, serving to protect the central nervous system by reducing and maintaining low levels of homocysteine in the brain.

The most important of the B vitamins are B12, B9, and B6.  Deficiencies in B12 and B9 have been closely linked to cognitive decline and memory loss.  Both of these vitamins help drive the body’s ability to convert homocysteine to methionine and preventing neurotoxic and cardiotoxic homocysteine from accumulating in the brain.

Antioxidant Vitamins

These types of vitamins include vitamins E, C, and A. These vitamins act like the B vitamins in that they protect the brain’s neurons from damage.  These vitamins clean up free radicals and reduce stress on the central nervous system.

Vitamin D

A deficiency in vitamin D is linked to short-term memory loss.  Research also shows that there are vitamin D receptors in the brain which help in controlling memory.  Taking vitamin D can help improve working memory, concentration, and mental capacity.

Minerals

There are several minerals which can be taken as natural supplements for memory boost. These include magnesium, iron, selenium, calcium, and zinc.

Natural supplements are a great way to help improve the memory.  They are well-tolerated and safe to use.
